These were some beautiful words that I found written by one of the people who attended Afrikaburn and they really do sum up the event so perfectly...
"R' Simcha Bunim explains that you should carry 2 notes, 1 in each pocket. On the first note you should write "The entire world was created for me" And on the second "I am but dust and ashes"
This sums up Afrikaburn for me!
It is unimaginable if you haven't experienced it before. As you walk around this amazing playground everything is a gift for you. The earth vibrates to the music 24/7, everything has layers of depth and meaning (and dust), nothing is what you would have ever expected or have experienced before. Hearts are wide open, kindness is the currency, healing finds you, your mind is constantly expanded and you experience complete presence in the moment. I'm not sure that I expected it to be so life affirming and life transforming... On the one hand you can't help but feel that everything there was hand picked/curated for you. Each person that you meet (often coming from the opposite ends of the earth), each song as you listen to the lyrics and how it seems to have been written perfectly for you, each unique experience and the way it all unfolds, to each artwork and how it holds so much personal meaning... And then- BOOM- it all gets burned and the lights come down and the music stops and whatever you brought in with you, you take out with you and the earth returns to its silence and you are reminded that we are but 'dust and ashes' temporarily traveling through this one wild and precious life... What a powerful reminder of the juxtaposition of the incredible impact that we are capable of, that each one of us has unlimited potential and can create the perfect world for ourselves and others and yet we are so fragile and fleeting...
We have to make this life count!
