Overlanding to Victoria Falls

Updated: Jun 12, 2023

Okay so we did this trip a while ago but it is most certainly well worth mentioning as it has got to be one of the most epic trips we’ve done and definitely one to tick off your bucket list! This whole deal was a Groupon special and we grabbed it with both hands as it was an absolute bargain! We headed off in Dec 2012 with Nomad Tours from Jhb. On our first night we overnighted at Camp Itumela which is in Palapye and is a great overnight stop. They have the most divine food and a pool to cool off from the sweltering Botswana heat. Early the next morning we were off and spent about 12 hours on the road on our way to Vic Falls. We stayed at the Adventure Lodge in Vic Falls which has an amazing grassed campsite with fantastic and clean ablution facilities. It has plenty of shady trees to pitch your tent underneath and is also close to the swimming pool. They also offer all of the activities that there are to do at Vic Falls and have very friendly and knowledgeable staff. On day 3 we were taken on the Vic Falls Steam Train by The Steam Train Company into an unknown destination in the middle of the bush.We were taken out for about half an hour on the train with dj’s aboard and a train full of people all dressed in ‘Carnival’ themed outfits. There were marquee stretch tents set up with live music, great food and the awesome backdrop of the African night sky with a blanket of stars to see us into the night. WOW!!!! It was ‘fantabulous’… If ever you are in Vic Falls and would like to book an excursion , either contact them via their website and chat to Sean Young or get hold of them via their Facebook Group for the experience of a LIFETIME!!!!

The Vic Falls Carnival had an array of various bands from Africa playing over the 3 days namely, Jeremy Loops (who’s music is AMAZING!), The Graeme Watkins Project, Plush, Zahara to name but a few… It looks as if this will be an annual event so be sure not to miss out on it! New Years Eve must have had at least 3000 people there who partied well into the night with a great view of “The Smoke That Thunders” in the background. It was a really well organized and well supported event which I can highly recommend to all.

Thank you to all who made this amazing journey possible and yet another dream come true!
